Dear Auntie Amy,

That is very beautiful indeed. Thank you so much for sharing it.

I came here many days ago from the Stakers blog, as many have. I have prayed and cried for your family many times.

We lost our son unexpectedly in November 2008 and it was a very emotional time for our entire family, including the beloved aunties. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you are you walk this path.

At times I have felt very close to my son as he has labored valiantly on our behalf from the other side. I haven’t had much experience with death and dying in my life before, so this has been a new and challenging experience for me. We’ve often been taught that those spirits who are called home too soon have important work to do on the other side. I always imagined that the work was something vague, unknowable, and unrelated to the craziness of this life.

But the Proclamation to the Family says that “the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children.” If that is so, I can’t imagine any more important work than strengthening and protecting families. I have felt Dex’s presence so keenly at times that I can’t help but think that one of his most important assignments MUST be to watch over our family and help us return to our Heavenly Father. He has a vested interest in us because we are his family, warts and all, and I know that we are a fulltime job sometimes!

They are always there for us. Our family members who have gone on before love us and care about us. They are concerned about us and are interested in the choices we make. They are fighting for our salvation whether we see them, feel them, recognize them or not. The Lord has promised us in the Doctrine and Covenants that “I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.”

I used to think the atonement was only about the ultimate physical healing of our bodies as well as forgiveness of sins. I have come to understand pretty recently that it's about all kinds of healing, including our hearts at times like this. Lucky for us, the Lord descended below all, suffering pains and afflictions of every kind. He suffered every single burden known to man so that He could succor us from a place of understanding. There is no extremity that He has not visited. There is no sense of desperation that He has not felt. Even when I don’t understand everything I am feeling and experiencing, He does. And He’ll help me get through it every time.

Someone once told me "I don't think you ever get over something like this, but with the Lord's help, you can get through it."

Hugs and prayers to all of you.

Megan
